Return To Umbria & Contest Giveaway! | Print |

Our long awaited return to Umbria finally took place this past weekend, and although the weather has not been as pleasant as we'd hoped for, it is wonderful to be back "home". Both of our farmhouses held up surprisingly well after being left unoccupied for the past five months and all it took was a good cleaning to get them both back into shape. I think my favorite part of being back in Italy is having the ability to visit the amazing local markets whenever the urge strikes, and so far in the past four days we've visited two of our favorite farmer's markets and plan to visit yet another tomorrow. In between my cleaning, unpacking and sorting, I have also managed to squeeze in a good deal of time in my country kitchen developing new recipes to use up all of the fresh ingredients we've bought at the markets. Over the past few days I've been shelling fresh spring peas, removing fat green fava beans from their pods, roasting ripe red San Marzano tomatoes, and braising tiny purple artichokes.

It is really difficult not to be an inspired cook when one is surrounded by the very best fresh local ingredients, and I know I'll spend countless hours in my kitchen over the next six months that we'll spend in Umbria. Of course the view from my kitchen window is so stunning that I could stand there all day looking out at the rolling hills beyond our property (see photo above taken from my kitchen window!).

Our half a year here will be busy as our farmhouse rental, Il Casale di Mele, is almost completely booked right through to the end of summer, we'll have family and friends visiting, we have a fully landscaped property that require tending to each week, a fall olive harvest to complete, and of course in our "spare time" we hope to spend many, many hours discovering everything that Umbria has to offer. The next six months may be a bit hectic at times, but we'll enjoy every minute of our time here in Umbria!

CONTEST WINNER ~ Chosen with random.org is   #15 Wendy Jo from Minnesota. Please contact me with your shipping address!

To celebrate our return to Umbria, I have decided to run a contest giveaway for all of my Italian Food Forever visitors. Since all the prizes chosen are from Amazon.com, I will have to limit the contest to United States residents only for shipping purposes. I have chosen a few of my favorite items as prizes that celebrate the wonderful region of Umbria. The prizes for this contest include;

Olivella Mix Cream and Moisturizer - Olivella hand cream, body cream and moisturizer are made from 100% Extra Virgin olive oil and are scented with natural essences of delicate floral notes. They are great for all body types and will replenish your skin with the natural nutrients found in olive oil. I personally use Olivella products and love how my skin feels afterwards.

Monini Extra Virgin Olive Oil D.O.P. - 500 ml - This oils vintage bouquet and a wooden hint typical of oils from Umbria make it a perfect condiment for game and grilled meats. Its unique characteristics have been recognized by the Denomination of Protected Origin (DOP) which indicates superior quality and guarantees local origin.

Handmade Limone Oil Bottle From Umbria Italy - This bottle comes from The Italian Pottery Outlet's Umbria Collection, and is from a small, hill town near Assisi. This small family factory has been making ceramics for generations.

Umbria (EYEWITNESS TRAVEL GUIDE) - DK Eyewitness Travel's full-color guidebooks to hundreds of destinations around the world truly show you what others only tell you. They have become renowned for their visual excellence, which includes unparalleled photography, 3-D mapping, and specially commissioned cutaway illustrations. This is my favorite guide to travel with as it is small, light and packed full of important information.

I have family in the mountains south east of Rome and have toured Italy 3 times now, but not Umbria. Not to mention, any place I can sample porchetta would be bonus.
My kitchen is "Auntie pasta's kitchen" and I host 2 supper clubs a month. Many folks want me to teach them to cook Italian!!

How wonderful is it to go to a website on a regular basis just to forget about the stress of our busy every day lives and for brief moments feel as though you're in another country and experiencing something that you know you'll probably never get to experience. You do this for me. You make Italy come alive and I can forget for a while. Thank you.

My family was from Bari and I keep in touch with them with the hopes of getting to Italy for the first time in my life, maybe one of these days, and Umbria would be a great start. Umbria is noted for 3 things, olive oil, tobacco and vineyards, which hits me right where I live, because I LOVE cooking with olive oil in all my recipes and afterwards there is nothing better than a fine cigar and a glass of vino!

There are too many words to describe the feeling of being surrounded by all this Italian culture. Who could ever pass up the best food ,wine, culture and most beautiful country in the world. It has been a dream of mine to go to Italy and experience the way life should be. It would be nice to escape the American way of life and to just sit back relax and enjoy Life for a change. All I need is some wine ,some bruschetta and the rolling hills to look upon. Oh did I mention the wine? Oh yeah I did. Ciao!!

I would love to visit Umbria to find our second home. We have been to Italy twice since 2004, based in Tuscany and traveled around by car and train. On our first visit we knew this was where we wanted to be. We fell in love with Umbria. We have since made friends with a delightful couple who have a second home in Panicale,Umbria. They have introduced us to many regions of Umbria via the internet. We love the people, the beauty of he land, the food, the wine and the way of life in Umbria. I tell anyone who will listen that I am an Italian trapped in an Irish girls body, struggle to break free. So that is why. We want to live in Umbria some day.

Deborah,

First, thanks for the opportunity to comment and your website is awesome!! I visted Italy for the first time last year - a little place called Fontana del Papa. I fell in love with Italy, the people, the culture, and the food. It was amazing to learn about the food and the culture. I would love to visit you and learn more!! Hopefully, one day, my flight from the States to Italy will be a one-way ticket!! :-) Ciao

I spent last summer in Le Marche, and am returning there again this summer. While I haven't been able to spend much time in Umbria, I did drive through it. I was exhausted from the 15 hours on a plane, but I couldn't help but be amazed by the beauty of Il Cuore Verde.

I leave for Italy in a little over a month, and I cannot wait!

After having followed Deb for the last 2 years, it seems so incredibly beautiful. I dream about the small markets that she gets her local produce at and makes me wish that we had more of that here. As much as I would love to, I cannot claim any heritage to Italy. If there is ever such a thing as an "adopted Italian", it would have to be me. I've only visited Italy once, but everything about it has transfused into my blood and mind... the food, the wine, the culture, the friendly people, the beauty of the land, the history... perhaps I should just move there?

To experience the fresh cooking right from the garden to the table. It would be a dream come true
