Italian Culinary Adventure ~ 2002

by Deborah Mele

Milano Duomo
Piazza del Doumo - Milan, Italy

Having lived in Italy for 8 years at one point in our lives, we try to get back every other year or so to visit our favorite cities, towns, and especially restaurants. The cuisine in Italy is like no other, and each region has its own specialties to share. We like to try and visit many of our favorite places each trip, to revisit favorite restaurants, as well as to explore new ones. I have kept a daily journal of our latest trip, particularly our culinary experiences, which I will share with you, adding in daily segments as often as I can.

After reading this journal, you may come to believe that all we do on vacation is eat, and I must admit, that as self proclaimed "foodies" all of our vacations do indeed often revolve around food. You may also wonder how one can visit Italy and not immerse themselves in the vast fountain of history found in the cathedrals and museums, and probably if this had been our first trip to Italy we would indeed want to explore Italy in that manner. However, after living in Italy for 8 years, traveling extensively during that time, as well as returning a number of times since then for vacations, we have already explored most of the major museums and cathedrals quite thoroughly. We chose to spend our two week's vacation in Italy savoring all the various regional cuisines possible, and to bring back home with us many new recipes to try. We do in fact slip into many of the churches found in every town and city from time to time as we travel the country, but we are just as likely to visit the local outdoor markets and food shops. I will also give complete information on the hotels we stayed in during this recent trip, as well as addresses for the restaurants we dined in so others may use this information to plan their trips to Italy. I hope you enjoy reading this journal, and can savor the fantastic cuisine of Italy with me by reading my descriptions of the many wonderful meals we experienced on this trip.
