Cookbook Review - David Ruggerio's Italian Kitchen
Written By David Ruggerio
****
This is another Italian cookbook that anyone interested in traditional regional
recipes of Italy would enjoy owning. This book highlights the regional cuisine of southern
Italy, particularly that of Naples and Sicily where Mr. Ruggerio's ancestors are from.
Since I prefer the hearty cooking of southern Italy with it's rich, vibrant sauces, I
thoroughly enjoyed this book. The photographs are exceptional, and it is very difficult not
to want to race into the kitchen and begin cooking after browsing through this book.
I have now tried a number of recipes from the book, and all except one I would certainly
prepare again. I particularly enjoyed the Squid Stuffed with Shrimp, and the Neapolitan
Lamb with Potatoes and Tomatoes. I found all the recipes easy to follow, and the ingredients
readily available.
Throughout the book, Mr. Ruggerio has added extra information on the specialty foods
of the region such as Mozzarella di Bufala, as well regional and historical tidbits.
More than a mere cookbook, this is a great reference for anyone interested in the foods
of southern Italy. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone with an interest in regional Italian
cooking and it's history, particularly for those who appreciate robust southern Italian
cuisine.
